Customer Review: do not buy anything from WD
i brought a WD MyBook 80 gig hard drive. Used it twice. Once to turn it on, then when organised, another time to download all my music and photos for long time storage. I then packed it away for storage for jsut over a year. Just recently i pulled it out of the box to print some photos, and it wouldnt power up. I searched online to troubleshoot and it seems that it is a common problem, WD are aware of the fault. I called them and WASIM (customer support rep) stated it was probably the faulty powering in the HD and that it cant be fixed. BUT since my warranty was only for a year, they are not responsible for loss of data, or replacement item. Data recovery is a further cost. They even recommended me to their site to find a data recoverer (CAN YOU BELIEVE SUCH A THING). The point of an external drive is to store long term data and prevent this. I spoke with a supervisor SANATH and he re-affirmed WD position, but also told me that i probably did not take proper care of the device during usage. WHICH IS FUNNY AS THE THING WAS STORED IT IT’S ORIGINAL PACKAGING AND STORED.

My advice, do not buy anything from Western Digital, their customer support is terrible, they are aware of a faulty power supply within the hard drive, and refuse to do anything about this. STAY AWAY. I have a SEAGATE drive also that has worked (despite a cracked casing) much more reliably. I have a US supervisor due to call me tomorrow, i’ll update this post with details.
Customer Review: way more reliable than i imagined
I can’t say it’s the fastest thing, but it’s also the only external I’ve ever owned. Bought it for 80 bucks after rebate from Circuit City YEARS ago…I’d say about 4. I can’t believe it’s still going from all the horror stories i hear about external hard drives. I have held my music and pictures on this exclusively…kinda stupid to do that on any hard drive, but either way, it’s been working strong.

It is not a traveler. It’s kinda big especially for 80gb, and it needs a wall outlet. It’s ancient as far as hard drives go, but I figured I’d give it a great review anyway because it has served me amazingly well.

Now that I write this…I’ll expect it to crap out tonight.

I’ve had this external hard drive for about 4 months and have not had any problems with it. I use it for my iTunes storage and to backup all the important files on my laptop. The backup software that comes with this hard drive is great, I can pick whichever file I want or don’t want to backup. It’s not as easy to transport as some other, smaller hard drives but the speed of firewire and size of the drive fully make up for the inconvenience of the dimensions. Overall, great buy!

I baddly needed to backup my files and was hurtin for more hardrive space so I started shopping around and asking everyone’”What is the best option out there?” I quickly learned that Western Digital is the king of hard drives. But I thought I’d waste time and continue shopping and comparing all the other flash drives, portable drives, external hard drives, etc. etc. and man are those other things a huge waste of dough. They all cost way more money and hardly do anything to show for it. So after hearing all the great reviews ang realizing how much more bang for the buck I was really getting, I finnally got it threw my head and bought the bad boy. And man was it worth it! Customer Review: Don’t Bring in the Cavalry!
I also had one dead in the box. Customer support did not seem surprised by this and had me “reseat” the drive, i.e, take it out and put it back in again, which of course did nothing. Notice how the 5 star reviews praise the “cool” blue light? That may be the best thing you can say about it.

After reading other reviews I got a refund from Costco and bought a WD. So, like others, I never got as far as being able to tell how well it worked.

Customer Review: Dead on arrival first time around
Dead on arrival. Called Cavalry’s customer support and told them it appeared that the hard drive was bad since I had to format it due to not working and only 3 of the six lights on the front were lit. I was told to format again and that it was normal that only 3 of 6 lights were supposed to be illuminated.

I re-formatted (a very long process on a 2TB configuration). Still totally non-working so called customer support back and they told me drive bad and return for another drive array. Did so and Amazon immediately sent another. This drive arrived pre-formatted (as advertised) and runs perfectly! I haven’t used it a great deal since it is only for my photography back-ups. NOTE: If the original arrived and worked as well as the second, it would get a five-star rating.
